Totally forgot

to mention this.

“Modern means living in the now and looking forward, but also being aware of what the past has given us. Modern is the freedom, and the chutzpah, to combine the best of everything that’s ever been thought of—or, perhaps, the best that you can afford—into something that’s unique and beautiful. Modern isn’t afraid to take a stance, declines to be neutral, but doesn’t take itself too seriously.”

Will be back soon when the rounds of my psyche are completed.

  1. Great quote but sadly 'modern' tends to take itself very seriously.

  2. Contemporary can go many ways. What I love is to see traditional furnishings mixed up with a great abstract work of art.

  3. Modern is ... you ! As well as each and everyone of you who dared to give today's definition of a term that has been kicking around for long enough to need a facelift from time to time. I like your approach: no complexes about going toward the best or best afforded to create what is unique and aiming at a light touch.

  4. I agree with le style. I think you are confident to know what you want and make no apologies. I don't call that modern. I call that timeless.

  5. Rose, Karena, le style et la matiere and home before dark, thank you. I never expected comments on this but I am very grateful that you read it and didn't find it facile. As to feeling modern - there's a biiiiiiiiiiiiig birthday coming up at the end of the month and I feel very much of the last century. I was raised by my grandparents, both born in the 19th century, and here I am close to their ages ... well, not actually that close - in the 21st century. Sorta makes one realize in this context numbers have very little meaning. Tell that to the bank manager, I hear you say.

  6. I loved your definition of 'modern' Barry! I can't say it more eloquently than le style, so I won't even try!
How fabulous to be published, Congratulations!

    hope you are well.

  7. Hello, Joan. Thank you. I had just decided to go to bed when your comment came in and I just had to say goodnight. Being asked to contribute to a magazine came as a surprise and I was a bit nonplused for a while but recovered as you can see! I am well and I hope you and yours are too.
