Happy Independence Day Weekend

I know this image is used ad nauseum on this holiday but it remains one of the most apt and the most beautiful: Childe Hassam's The Fourth of July, 1916

Below is another of this great American Impressionist's works that for me encapsulates summer on the East Coast, Celia Thaxton's Garden, 1890.

In honor then of this Independence Day holiday a Friday cocktail, the Americano.

1 oz Campari
1 oz sweet vermouth
Club soda
Lemon twist or slice orange to garnish

Put Campari and vermouth in an old-fashioned glass over ice and top off with club soda.

Apparently first introduced in the 1860s in Italy and was later renamed as the Americano because of its popularity with American tourists in Italy during Prohibition.
