My apologies for my tardiness in replying - I waited to reply until I had a new computer as my old one had become so slow and unable to cope with more than one window and even registering my own comments was problematic.

I think Villa Kéryos is magical in its invocation of the ancient world, albeit with all mod cons - an invocation helped undoubtedly by its location on the edge of the Mediterranean. As with many things, it depends on the skill of the designer or architect and, as in this case, on that of the furniture-maker - Belle Epoque confidence, money, taste, knowledge, skill and imagination. What a combination!

Thank you for the compliment!Bluehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07652670896513329236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785207417164829425.post-89099577722606513682012-01-24T09:48:42.942-05:002012-01-24T09:48:42.942-05:00gésbi, thank you. Nice line, tha...'Depth of scholarship..."
Nice line, that, and it can apply not only to the Villa Kerylos but to
the author of this delightful post.
Isn't Kerylos wonderful? The perfect synthesis of widely spaced
centuries of taste. As you say, it escapes being kitsch, which in itself
is a pretty neat trick.Toby Worthingtonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05887066048372484464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785207417164829425.post-78837038117552114642012-01-17T06:24:51.158-05:002012-01-17T06:24:51.158-05:00Delighted for you!Delighted for you!gésbihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18094108253356167918noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785207417164829425.post-10767155882375419632012-01-15T18:09:14.702-05:002012-01-15T18:09:14.702-05:00The Devoted Classicist, The Enchanted Home, Karena...The Devoted Classicist, The Enchanted Home, Karena, Andrew, Michele from Boston, Laurent, thank you, all.

Michele, the day we were there the Mediterranean was calm - hardly a wave in sight. What surprised me most of all, and if you remember this was my first sight of the Mediterranean was the lack of ocean/sea/salt smell which is normally quite strong elsewhere.

Laurent, quite a compliment. The Getty Villa - which I cannot disparage, especially given that it's free - was choked with bewildered school children and their L.A.-plastic chaperone mothers during my visit.
