I was never taught about pitched roofs, and if you get the angles wrong they can look absolutely dreadful, so these have helped to fill the gap. His books are excellent for explaining roofs, and I think overall are fascinating as a discussion on domesticity in general. In a lot of ways we've come full circle. There is definitely a movement towards small production and the hand crafted and bespoke, and our planning of interiors is still not dissimilar from that of the Arts and Crafts era, with the rest of a building just the window dressing so to speak (and as you say, Modernism is not exactly modern now).Heidihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01432089507602828735noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785207417164829425.post-37075459783426274882015-04-12T22:04:14.251-04:002015-04-12T22:04:14.251-04:00The house of the built-in benches. But they have a nice "booth" breakfast area with an L-shaped built-in bench. At the open house my "cozy" instincts led me to sit in the corner of the "L" where I felt great, the most humane place in the whole house. Some houses don't even have one such place.Terryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14154846109609330503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785207417164829425.post-3479534917623885292015-04-11T11:00:34.846-04:002015-04-11T11:00:34.846-04:00The Devoted Classicist, thank you. Interior design students do, or did, learn about architectural styles, which could mean as much or as little as the school or accrediting body wished.

My own view of American Arts and Crafts has been limited and I'm finding it very interesting as part of this occasional series to open my eyes to what there is. Your comment has been helpful in that, so thank you. There are many great houses here in the U.S., too often identified as Tudor Revival because of the half-timbering, that were directly influenced by the British A & C; it is just that the educational factor has been lacking, especially among the professional architects and interior designers. Thanks, Blue, for helping to spread The Word. The Devoted Classicisthttp://tdclassicist.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785207417164829425.post-62822844298976195942015-04-10T10:16:55.976-04:002015-04-10T10:16:55.976-04:00I think if one looks at these images spacially the...I think if one looks at these images spacially they are in fact very 'modern'. I mean -they're cold enough! Of course when one would add in their fabrics and furniture and tchockes it would begin to look very homey and of the time.
